The world’s first ‘smart hoody’ to launch in June

Kickstarter project Zuzance is following the assumption that for wearable technology to become popular, it must also be fashionable enough to be wearable. Its crowd-funding project is targeting younger buyers with a smart hoody offering “affordable, wearable technology”.

The start-up’s goal is to use  Kickstarter to lower the current $50 retail price for its smart hoody, which should initially be available this coming June. Zuzance builds NFC (near-field communication) tags into strategic touch-points on the hoody, such as the left and right cuffs.

Zuzance is developing a smart hoody

How it works is that by holding an NFC-enabled smartphone close to one of these NFC, wearers can control pre-programmed functions on their phone: for example, tapping the phone on your right wrist could mean changing phone profile from “at home” to “on the move”, switching on mobile data and turning off wifi. The Zuzance comes with four NFC tags – on both wrists, and at the top of both the left and right front pockets.

The advantage of using NFC tags is that they’re washable, and the hoody is, according to Zuzance’s Kickstarter page, “perfect for every occasion”. Backers can choose from four colors, and if anyone’s on a tight budget, they can get involved with a donation of just $5 for a “Zuzance work-out” sweatband with an embedded NFC chip.

Anyone who sponsors $100 will get a limited-edition “purple with gold design” hoody, while $150 will provide access to a custom edition hoody and $200 will buy you a custom edition, a wristband and a $15 arm band.

In a nod to the reality that a hoody isn’t quite perfect for absolutely every occasion, anyone pledging $500 will get all of the above plus a customized old skool blazer with embedded NFC tags plus a thank-you video from the Zuzance team.

Interested? You have until April 9, 2014 to weigh in with your wallet.
