Fashion meets wearable tech: event in London next week

April 10, 2014   All wearables, Smart clothing, Smart wristbands, Smartwatches   No comments

Updated with new date and venue… “Yes, but I wouldn’t wear that thing!” It’s a popular response by fashionistas to the current range of smart watches, wristbands and especially eyewear. So far, wearable technology hasn’t crossed the chasm into being considered a thing of beauty, even if Gwyneth Paltrow has been seen sporting a Jawbone UP (or the “ultimate health accessory for control freaks“, to use Daily Mail speak).

We are the goon squad and we're coming to town, beep beep

In the 1990s, sportswear became popular among – ahem – a less sporty circle of people, and leading cool brands like Nike and Adidas started manufacturing sportswear in XXXXXL sizes.

Two decades on, could the same happen to wearables? Will we see LA rappers flashing their Shine? Will Hollywood stars be photographed on the red carpet proudly sporting their Fitbug?

That’s one of the questions that the FashTech crew are trying to address at their meet-ups. Here’s what it the networking group is bravely trying to achieve:

FashTech aims to drive innovation within Fashion and Technology, based around a series of talks and informal networking to promote and discuss everything from Fashion mobile apps to wearable technology to e-commerce sites to bloggers and everything in-between.

The first meet-up took place on the super-trendy Google campus in east London in March, with some positive feedback from the tech-clothes horses who attended. If you missed that, but are interested, the next one takes place in London next Wednesday April 18, from 6pm at the west London offices of Net-a-Porter. Organizer is Alex Semenzato, whose profile says he is “driving innovation within fashion and tech”.

If you’re a start-up looking to accelerate awareness of your project, then consider going along. The event has already caught the eye of London-based entrepreneur and investor Ken Blakeslee, whose whatcaughtmyeye blog is essential reading for start-ups in the wearables space.

Register here for next week’s event. WTW can’t be there but we’re interested in hearing from people who do attend. Get in touch!
