Finally, an Apple Watch – our first insights

Unless you were on Mars today, you will have noticed that Apple announced a smartwatch, the Apple Watch (not the iWatch) and some new iPhones.

The watch might look nice – but don’t be fooled by the cute Mickey Mouse watch face. It’s a tethered device that requires an iPhone to work.

Apple managed to keep the news under wraps, while details of the new, bigger iPhones was widely leaked.

It does feature some neat touches – for example, inductive charging – so no messy cables to power up the watch – and a heart-rate monitor, but these are not new to the market, and it’s still a tethered device, in other words it needs to pair with a smartphone to be smart.

As Apple CEO Tim Cook said: “We invented new intimate ways to connect and communicate directly from your wrist”. The Watch needs an iPhone, just as Samsung and Sony devices have required an Android device. Cook’s justification: “Apple Watch requires the iPhone because it’s been seamlessly designed to work together.”

As the blog QZ put it, “Apple Watch looks a lot like a watch”. And that’s one of the disappointments. Look beyond the screen image and it looks remarkably like a Sony Smartwatch, and the “standard” cheap silicon strap looks disappointing.

It’s typical Apple that even the metal in the 18 carat gold version of the watch is claimed to be “twice as hard” as standard gold. When it comes to consumer electronics, Apple certainly has the Midas touch.
